Many people ask is DigitalOcean good and reliable and the answer is yes, they are amazing. The only real downside of DO is that you will have to manage everything because it is not managed.
Below I will help you learn more about them with a DigitalOcean review. I strongely recommend if you are a beginner choose shared hosting instead for the simplicity. For the top domain and hosting service check out SiteGround at 60% off.
DO provides hosting of Linux and FreeBSD virtual private servers. DigitalOcean was founded in 2011 by Ben and Moisey Uretsky. Even though DO is a fairly young web hosting company that hasn’t stopped it from becoming one of the largest hosting companies. That tells you something about their service.
One thing about DO that you can never take away is their great reputation. Most people who start hosting with them are usually pleased and refer them to others.
- Droplets, which are the servers you can create on DO.
- SSD Hard Drives
- Powerful Hex Core machines with dedicated ECC Ram and RAID SSD storage.
- DigitalOcean cloud servers are provisioned in as little as 55 seconds.
- KVM Virtualization
- Simple Control Panel
- Private Networking
- Transfer Globally
- Simple API
- Distributions & One-Click Install Apps
DigitalOcean support is very quick I will admit that. It takes them minutes to answer my questions. What I don’t like about their support is that they do not have a contact number. You might not have a problem with this, but I love phone support and live chat and I was disappointed that they don’t offer this.
- Ticket support
This is an unmanaged VPS so remember that you have to handle the security. For the price that you are getting this VPS hosting for, it is worth it. Managed VPS, which is way more expensive does everything for you, but don’t worry it is not difficult. They have so many guides and tutorials to help you such as their firewall guide. If you don’t know what a firewall is it is a network security system that monitors and controls network traffic based on a set of rules. When it is time for you to set up security, check out this firewall setup page and this security measures page to help you.
All the server duties will fall on you because once again it is unmanaged. You will have to learn a few things, but again there are many guides to help you.
One of the cons of DO is that you can’t add more than one public IPv4 IP address per virtual server. DO assures all users that this is not a problem because they are implementing IPv6 and users will see it soon. There are ways to get around this. To find out how to get around this check out additional IP.
When it comes to pricing DigitalOcean can compete with the best cloud providers. When you check out their prices it is one of the hooks that reel you in to them. The cost is cheap and very affordable. They give both monthly and hourly pricing. I would never choose the $5 dollar plan because it only offers 512MB. If it is for small projects, then it’s no problem, but nothing big. At the very least you should get the $10 plan and if you click this (DigitalOcean coupon) you will get $10 added to your account. That means you will get the first month free or a discount depending on if you want an even bigger plan.
If you don’t know what uptime is it is the amount of time that a server has stayed up and running.
DigitalOcean boasts that they have a 99.99% uptime like all hosting companies. They even claim that if you receive any downtime whatsoever they will credit you based on the amount of time that service was unavailable. This is another plus for DO.
When grading uptime you must understand that there is no hosting in the world that will always have 100% uptime. It doesn’t matter how much you pay for hosting. You can have 100% uptime for three months, but then have 99.95% the next.
DO delivers what they promise. They have a great reputation of having amazing uptime. From my research, experiments, and from hearing from 30+ DO customers I find that DigitalOcean has above average uptime. Expect an uptime of 99.98% or higher.
DigitalOcean is a great unmanaged VPS hosting provider. They are fast, they have great uptime, and they are known to deliver.
