OpenCart Vs Shopify

Web Hosting

In this review we will be comparing OpenCart vs Shopify to find the best ecommerce platform for your next business. I will compare scalability, prices, features, support, and more to help you make an easy choice and to help you create your website today.

OpenCart Vs Shopify: 14 Differences (Easy Choice)

Themes

Shopify has 24 beautiful free themes to choose from. They also have 150+ gorgeous premium themes ranging from $100 – $180.

OpenCart has a limited number of free themes just like with Shopify. To buy premium themes you are going to have to go to third-party sites such as ThemeForest which also sells Shopify themes.

Payment gateways

Shopify

Shopify is powered by Stripe.

Your customers can checkout directly from your website. Shopify also gives you access to over 70 payment gateways. This is great if you receive customers from different countries. It will allow your business to make more money. Some of the payment gateways are Checkout.com, Authorize.net, Nochex, IATS Payments, G2A Pay, GoCoin, MultiSafepay, Elavon Converge, Payment Express PxPay, Plug’n Pay, PaymentExpress, Sage Payment Solutions, First Data Payeezy, Beanstream, GestPay, and more.

OpenCart

Unlike Shopify OpenCart offers 40+ payment gateways for your business. Some of the payment gateways include 2Checkout, Card Connect, Cardinity, China SmartPay, PayPoint, Skrill, WorldPay Online Payments, BluePay Hosted Form, SagePay Direct, Globalpay Redirect, Paymate, PayPal Express Checkout, Pilibaba, eWAY, and more.

Check out all the payment gateways here.

POS (Point of sale)

One thing that Shopify offers that OpenCart doesn’t is point of sale software.

With Shopify POS you are able to sell your products in-store and on the go. You are also given a free credit card reader.

Storage space

Shopify

All Shopify plans allow you to hold an unlimited number of products. Your store will have unlimited bandwidth and storage space.

OpenCart

OpenCart’s storage space depends on the hosting provider. With the recommended hosting company SiteGround, depending on the plan that you choose you will either have 10GB, 20GB, or 30GB of web space. For most sites this is enough, but Shopify is better when it comes to site scalability.

Pricing differences

OpenCart is free to use. All you need is hosting. SiteGround, which is the top hosting company starts at $3.95 a month.

Start SiteGround at 60% off.

Shopify has a $29 a month plan, $79 a month plan, and $299 a month.

Shopify is more expensive, but it is definitely worth it for a successful business.

SSL certificate

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates the identity of a website and encrypts information sent to the server using SSL technology.

OpenCart

With OpenCart you are going to have to purchase your own SSL, but when you host with SiteGround you will be given a free SSL for a small website.

Shopify

Shopify includes a free SSL certificate that uses industry standard 256-bit encryption technology. All pages, content, credit card, and transaction information is protected by the same level of security used by banks.

Dashboard

Both interfaces are user-friendly. You will have no problem with either one you choose, but Shopify has a far better admin interface.

You can look forward to an uncluttered interface, streamlined dashboard showing you vital shop information each time you log in, interactive real-time statistics panel, inventory warnings, a full featured asset system which lets you use and re-use your stock photography, logos or product pdf’s wherever you need them.

Which is better for blogging?

You will not succeed or you will impede your growth if you do not implement a blog on your site. Blogging greatly increases visitors which increases sales.

Shopify makes it extremely easy to start blogging and posting images around your products.

OpenCart offers free blog modules, but you are going to end up upgrading for around $10.

SEO

When it comes to SEO there is no real difference between the two platforms. Both platforms will allow your website to perform well in the search engines. When we talk about SEO there are a number of factors that come into the equation such as your theme, modules, content, etc.

Add-ons

Most of Shopify’s best features are built-in already, but you also have the option of purchasing plugins from their online store. Shopify has over 1500 free and paid apps that you can choose from to enhance the functionality of your website.

In my opinion Shopify has better extensions, but OpenCart’s paid extensions can be bought at a cheaper price and they offer over 400 free extensions for your business.

Sales reports comparison

OpenCart

With OpenCart you are able to calculate the total amount of sales by day, week, or month.  You are able to track viewed products and you can check out your most popular products.

Shopify

Shopify allows you to view an in-depth report of activity on your shop. These reports include traffic, conversions, and best-selling products. You are also able to export your store’s data to a CSV file. To sum it up you will get sales reports, tax reports, payment reports, traffic reports, insight report, and finance reports.

Check out the different Shopify reports available to you.

Support

Shopify

Shopify excels when it comes to support. Shopify allows you to chat directly with their gurus to get help with your questions. With Shopify you also have 24/7 phone support, you can search for documentation in their search area, there is a community forum, and more.

If you hover over their resource’s category you will see many helpful guides, videos, podcasts, motivational success stories, Shopify’s business encyclopedia, free tools, app store, theme store, and you can check out Shopify experts.

OpenCart

I’m not impressed with the OpenCart support. Outside of their website you will not find a lot of support for your shop. A lot of your support will come from your SiteGround host which offers 24/7 phone, chat, and email support.

Popularity

Why does popularity matter? Popularity matters because it shows that companies are actually succeeding with their chosen platform

Shopify is home to many big ecommerce brands such as tattly.com, greats.com, dodocase.com, calmtheham.com, grovemade.com, lindsayletters.com, and more. Shopify even has a success stories page that you can check out.

It is easier to find more notable Shopify websites than OpenCart. However, I was able to find a few popular notable sites using OpenCart such as poorvikamobile.com, menegin.com, and goody25.com

Which is better?

I believe Shopify is the clear winner. Though it is more expensive it is well worth it. You get more features for a successful business. You have a greater chance of becoming successful.

OpenCart is good as well. The better ecommerce platform is Shopify, but if you are trying to save a little bit of money then OpenCart is a good option. Don’t procrastinate on your goals. Start now. It’s extremely easy.

Awesome ecommerce quotes

“Clothes, shoes, glasses and just about everything we thought would never move fully online will all be online. The reason is simple: why leave the comfort of your own home when you can get something custom made to your exact size for less? I believe this is the future.” – Patrick Curtis, wallstreetoasis.com

“I was reading all these reports that were down on retail brick and mortar, saying it’s all about online… I think brick and mortar is an amazing opportunity to use our stores and our store staff as a vehicle to truly engage with the community in a way no other retailers are doing.” – Jim Brett, President of West Elm
