Wix Vs Joomla

Web Hosting

Let’s compare Wix Vs Joomla to help you choose the best website builder for your next website today. Both of these companies are extremely popular and many people ask which one is better? It is very simple and with this review you will see why. Let’s begin.

Wix Vs Joomla: Which Is Better? 10 Differences To Know

Setup and ease factor comparison

Getting started with Wix is very easy and the user-interface is simple to understand. With Wix you’re going to have to click, drag, drop, and continue to click, drag, and drop. If you’re into WYSIWYG website builders you will like it.

Many people think that Joomla is difficult, which is not true. You don’t need to have coding skills. You can have your website up and running in less than 20 minutes. I will give you a quick walk-through.

Start with HostGator, sign up, log in your cPanel, install Joomla, login to Joomla admin, install a ready-made theme, and you’re done. With Joomla you can install thousands of powerful features in just a few clicks to make everything easier for you. Also, if you know how to code you can do even more things.

When it comes to setup they both have their advantages, but I personally prefer Joomla.

Let’s start by comparing the prices.

Wix pricing comparison

Let’s start with Wix first. Never choose the most basic plan and the personal use plan because there are limitations. If you’re going to choose Wix you are better off going with the unlimited $12.42 plan because it gives you more bandwidth, storage, and an SEO booster to help you rank.

I would like to note that these are the yearly plans, which reduces the price. The month to month cost for the unlimited plan is going to be $15.95. For better pricing always go yearly. Overall Wix plans are not the cheapest among website builders. I find them to be expensive, but some might find it manageable.

Joomla has no cost. With a CMS like Joomla, WordPress, or Drupal all you need is hosting and you can easily install any CMS that you desire. The best hosting provider is HG. I personally use HostGator for all of my websites, which will cost you less than 10 dollars a month.

Let’s compare the HostGator and Wix prices for the next three years. With Bluehost you will be paying $142. With Wix you will be paying less than $400. Joomla wins when it comes to price. (Check out HostGator)

Website Ownership comparison

Wix is not for you. You do not own it. You are hosting on their servers and you are using their URL. They reserve the right to display Wix Brand ads. That is why it is important that you should never choose their basic plan. If you check out their terms of service it says,

“You hereby grant Wix a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, transferable and sublicensable right and license to use your User Content (in whole or in part) worldwide in order to provide you with the Wix Services, and as further specified in Section ‎2.2(5) above.”

If you agree to their TOS, they can modify your site’s content if they see fit. This is not good for business purposes. With Joomla and HostGator everything belongs to you. It is always wise to host on your own servers. This topic leads me to the next difference between these two companies.

Exporting your website to a different host.

Since the site is for Wix you will not be able to export your Wix site elsewhere. Here are the exact words from regarding this matter.

“It is not possible to export files, pages or sites, created using the Wix Editor, to another external destination or host. All Wix sites must be hosted on the Wix servers.”

“It is also not possible to embed your Wix site onto an external site.”

With Joomla you can easily export your site at any time.

Theme comparisons between them.

Wix has around 530 HTML5 templates. Wix is a drag and drop builder so of course you can edit your theme using this feature, but it doesn’t allow you to get deep into customization and touch things. One of the reasons that I would never choose Wix is because once you pick a theme you can never change it. There is no going back. That means you will have the same old boring design forever. There will be no giving your business or blog a new look. For someone like me who is going to switch themes a million times until I get the right look and feel for my site this is a clear issue.

There are thousands of free and paid ready made Joomla themes of every kind. You can quickly install a theme from Joomla or you can go to websites like Forest Theme to get them.

Responsiveness comparison.

People are accessing the internet on their smart phones more than ever. You need to make sure that your site adjusts to phones and different devices without a problem. states that Wix sites are not responsive. They do not automatically adjust to screen size. This is something that customers have been complaining about for years, but there is still no change. Wix recommends that you use built-in gridlines in the Editor to fix this problem.

With Joomla you will have no trouble with installing responsive themes to help your mobile users navigate through your website.

Let’s check out the differences between SEO

You want to rank better than your competition. You want the best choice that will help you achieve the best SEO possible. Everyone knows that a CMS is better structured for SEO. They provide you with a wide variety of SEO plugins to give your website a boost. They also provide you with better quality themes to make your site faster and help your SEO.

Wix doesn’t offer you powerful SEO plugins like Joomla. Their sites are not responsive so that hurts your SEO. Lastly, their URL structure is terrible. You have to have a URL that is structured like this:!website-setup/c739. What you want is this: When is the last time that you have seen a page like this on the first page of Google? Sites that are powered by Wix do not rank well.

They say that Google doesn’t care about this, but even if that is true, would you want to link back to a site like that? You are hurting your chances of getting backlinks, which is what you need to rank better for different keywords. You might not know this, but on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015 Google confirmed that Wix sites were not ranking. They had to fix the problem. Wix SEO functionality is just not flexible. Joomla actually allows you to refine your SEO to your liking.

Features and flexibility

Wix has around 230 free and premium apps to give your store different functionality. Joomla on the other hand has over 8000 extensions. Obviously you are going to find more additional features that you can use for your business and more complex extensions. To give you an idea of how sophisticated these extensions are, there are extensions that turn your site into a scalable full feature store front. To get the ecommerce feature with Wix, you have to pay $16.17/mo for their ecommerce plan.

There are extensions such as CDN for Joomla that reduce server load time and increases your page load speeds. There are even firewall security extensions.

These extensions are the real deal and the best part is they are free. There are some that cost, but most of them are free. The problem with the Wix apps are that they are basic and they cost a monthly fee. You are most likely going to be paying around $3-10 per paid app every month.

I would like to add as well that Joomla is open source and Wix is not. With Joomla if you want you can modify codes like HTML and CSS.

Let’s compare the storage and bandwidth.

HostGator has unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth. That means you will have no problem in the future adding videos, podcasts, etc. You don’t have to worry about saving space. If you choose Wix’s most popular plan you will get unlimited bandwidth, but you will only get 10GB storage.

Technical support comparison

Wix has professional support. Wix support is the only thing that you can’t knock. They will bury you with tutorials, training videos, and they have pretty good email support. They also have forum support.

With Joomla you get a lot of guides and videos just like with Wix. Joomla has its own forum, but since a lot of people use Joomla, you will have a lot of different forum options. The reason that Joomla stands out when it comes to support is because of HostGator.

They will help you set up and manage your site. They give you 24/7 phone support and live chat so you can talk live with their staff while signing up. It’s always a good thing when you can call agents to give you immediate help.

In conclusion

Wix gets customers because of their hardcore marketing. Every time I turn on the TV I always see a Wix commercial. Joomla gets its customers because it is top of the line and everyone knows about it. Rarely do you see commercials about a Lamborghini.

You’re better off choosing Joomla than any website builder. I’ve been making websites for years and I don’t know anyone who will choose Wix over Joomla. It’s just not a wise choice. Joomla gives you more features, cheaper price, better SEO, more themes, better opportunity to make money, no need to drag and drop, more support options, etc. The choice is easy!
